Integrate Signifyd With AfterShip Returns
Overview
AfterShip Returns integrates with Signifyd, a leading AI-driven fraud protection platform, to leverage Signifyd's advanced machine learning algorithms to detect and prevent return fraud in real time. By connecting Signifyd, you can:
- Identify high-risk returns: You can view fraud risk analysis directly within the Returns admin for every RMA.
- Reduce financial losses: You can minimize losses from "wardrobing," "claims of non-receipt," and other common return fraud tactics by proactively assessing the RMAs.
Prerequisites
Make sure the following is in place before setting up the integration:
- Your Shopify store is already connected to AfterShip Returns.
- You have an active Signifyd account with a Team set up for your store.
- Your Signifyd Team is linked to the same Shopify store you use in AfterShip. Signifyd requires a one-to-one mapping between a Signifyd Team and a Shopify store. You cannot connect one Team to multiple stores.
Setup guide
Step 1: Get your Signifyd credentials
- Log in to your Signifyd Console.
- Go to Settings > Teams and select the Team you want to connect.
- You can also create a new team. Select + Add team from the top right corner, add a name, and click Ok.
- You can rename the team name or add members and define their roles as per your discretion.
- The API key and Team ID for every team are different.
- Copy the Team ID and API Key. You'll need both in the next step.
Step 2: Connect Signifyd in AfterShip Returns
- Go to Apps > View more apps in your AfterShip Returns admin.
- Search Signifyd, click on it and you will land on the Signifyd integration page, or navigate to the Signifyd integration page on AfterShip Returns website directly.
- Select AfterShip Returns from the dropdown and then click Install app.
- Select the right organization (online store) if you have multiple organizations configured in AfterShip Returns (Optional) for which you are establishing this integration.
- On the Auth page, from the dropdown, select the Shopify store that matches (authorized in) your Signifyd Team.
- Paste your Signifyd Team ID and API Key.
- Click Connect. AfterShip will verify your credentials before saving.
Upon successful connection, you can see your store (ID) listed under the Signifyd store connections.

Step 3: Turn on risk assessment
- Go to the Return Policy > Fraud Prevention in your AfterShip Returns admin
- Toggle on Risk Assessment.
- Select Auto-flag risky returns for manual review to suspend any active automation rules from applying on RMA flagged for review (
HOLD)
Once Risk Assessment is enabled, any return flagged by Signifyd is automatically marked as risky and AfterShip Returns's automation rules are suspended.

That's it. From this point on, every return request submitted through your store will automatically be sent to Signifyd for analysis.
Understanding the results
When a customer submits a return, AfterShip sends the request data to Signifyd in real time. You'll see a Fraud Check result on the RMA detail page. You can use it to decide whether to approve, hold, or reject the return before taking any action.
- Click View all indicators to see the full breakdown.

- Signifyd returns one of four decisions, which AfterShip maps to the following:
Signifyd decision | AfterShip label | What it means |
ACCEPT | βͺ Clear | No risk detected. The RMA processing can proceed normally |
HOLD | π‘ Review Required | Hold and inspect before processing the RMA |
CREDIT | π‘ Store Credit Recommended | Offer store credit instead of a refund |
REJECT | π‘ High Risk | Decline the return request |
- When a return is flagged as
HOLD,CREDIT, orREJECT, the RMA is automatically marked as a potential fraud risk. If Signifyd provides a reason, it will appear alongside the assessment to give your team more context.

- A Clear result (
ACCEPT) means no risk indicators were found, and the return can proceed as normal.

Important:
Signifyd provides a recommendation only for the RMA based on the risk assessment. It does not automatically approve or reject returns. Your team makes the final call.
Aids in reason-based fraud detection
AfterShip also uses your store's return reasons as part of the fraud signal. When a customer selects a reason like "Arrived too late" or "Item damaged," AfterShip automatically maps it to Signifyd's standardized fraud codes. This way, Signifyd's AI model has the right context to make an accurate assessment, regardless of how your reasons are worded.
Tips and best practices
- Match your store carefully: The Shopify store you select in AfterShip must be the same one authorized in your Signifyd Team. A mismatch will cause "Order not found" errors on fraud checks.
- Check your API key if assessments go missing: If a fraud check isn't showing on an RMA, your API key may have expired or been deleted in Signifyd. Review your integration settings to confirm the API key is still valid.
- Custom return reasons are handled automatically: AfterShip maps your return reasons to Signifyd's standardized codes. Any reason that doesn't have a direct match (including custom or "Other" reasons) is mapped to Signifyd's OTHER category, so data still flows through correctly.
FAQs
1. Why don't I see my Shopify store in the connection dropdown?
This is because only stores with a Connected status in your AfterShip organization will appear during the connection. Check your store's connection status under your AfterShip settings.
2. Can I connect one Signifyd Team to multiple Shopify stores?
No. Signifyd has a one-to-one relationship between Teams and stores. If you have multiple stores, you'll need to create a separate Signifyd connection for each one using its own Team API key.
3. What happens if I enter an invalid API key?
AfterShip will show an error and prevent you from saving. If the key becomes invalid after setup (for example, if it's deleted in Signifyd), fraud checks will stop running silently in the background β there's no visible error to the shopper, but the assessment will no longer appear on RMAs.
4. What if I haven't connected Signifyd yet for a store?
No fraud checks will be carried out, and no assessments will appear for that store until you set up the integration and enable the Risk Assessment in AfterShip Returns.
5. Will every return go through Signifyd?
Yes. Once Risk Assessment is enabled, all return requests submitted through AfterShip Returns for that store will be automatically assessed by Signifyd for fraud.
6. How much does Signifyd cost?
Signifyd is a separate third-party service with its own pricing. Visit signifyd.com or contact their sales team for pricing details.
